What a good day to start Narnia Web's history thread, on ANZAC Day, named after the Combined Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who served at Gallipoli on 25/4/1915. Bugles have rung out already, in New Zealand's Dawn Services, some conducted in Māori, I heard on the radio. The occasion will be marked not only in UK, but also in Belgium & Northern France, where C.S. Lewis also fought in WW1, alongside troops from Canada & the United States. As time takes its toll, family members, and medal-wearing veterans of other past conflicts will also march this morning, through Sydney, everyone wearing sprigs of rosemary for remembrance.

A memorial in Darwin, where veterans will also march, lists those who died where the destroyer, USS Peary still rests in her watery war grave, having succumbed there, to two Japanese bombing raids in WW2, which pulverised Darwin on 19/2/1942. I will remember my own father, thankful that he could swim, when his ship, USAT Meigs was also bombed and sunk in Darwin Harbour, on Australia's darkest day in WW2. Two battalions of American & Australian troops, including my father, had been sent on 16/2/1942 to Kupang in Dutch Timor, to bolster its defence, when besieged by Japanese forces. The convoy, including the USAT Meigs, was escorted by the cruiser, USS Houston as well as the USS Peary, until Japanese planes intercepted the convoy halfway on its journey, & was thus forced to return to Darwin, along with USS Peary, low on fuel after a submarine hunt, HMAS Swan & HMAS Warrego.

But after its sensationally courageous, successful and highly skilled seamanship in deflecting that Japanese attack on the convoy, where did the gallant USS Houston (CA-30) go to next? I hope the good citizens of USA's city of Houston have taken utmost pride at their namesake cruiser's marvellous performance on the way. We've seen movies of the bombing of Pearl Harbour which brought USA into WW2, but none of these events were ever mentioned in war movies. Are others in USA even aware that the same four Japanese aircraft carriers who launched the Pearl Harbour bombing, also subjected Darwin to exactly the same treatment on 19/2/1942? Or that there were about seventy other such air raids on Darwin & elsewhere in the Top End of Australia's mainland, until the tide turned in the allies' favour in 1943?

I'm grateful that Narnia member, Aslanisthebest, started the first edition of this history thread in 2011, though that was a good while ago. Appreciating the initiative & remembering that history is also about peace & considerably much more than only these wars and battles I've mentioned, I will ask the same questions provided on that thread for your discussion:

1. What is your favourite Era?

2. If you have a favourite, which country's history is your favourite to study?

3. Apart from the era you're living in now, what time era would you like to live in?

4. What is one item from history that you wish we still used in the present?

And I will also ask,

5. What is your least favourite Era, and why?

6. Is there any era you would certainly not want to live in and why?

7. Who is your favourite & most inspirational historic figure and why do you hold him or her in such esteem? Examples might be, Florence Nightingale who revolutionised the nursing profession? Or perhaps Polish-born Marie Curie, who discovered radium, used for X-rays?

Please remember, Narnia Web rules about politeness still apply. Enjoy your discussions amongst each other. I'd welcome other questions I can't think of right now, when I'd like some breakfast, first, having been awake, thinking about this thread, {ym} since the crack of dawn.

A blessed Lent to all. The theme this year is "let us journey together in hope."

For those who observe, it started with Ash Wednesday. The palm fronds from last Palm Sunday are gently and respectfully burned to form the ashes. Believers receive ashes to remember that "from dust thou came, and to dust thou shalt return. Repent, and believe the Gospel."

Two Ash Wednesday stories that you may find hopeful.

(quote #1)

SPEAKER ONE: "I’m Methodist but enjoy hanging out in this subreddit. We observe Ash Wednesday and put ashes on the forehead.

"A few years ago at an Ash Wednesday service, our pastor said something that stuck with me. It was about how it’s a personal choice to walk around with the ashes still on your head. He said something to the effect of “if your impulse is to keep the ashes on as an outward sign of being pious, I would encourage you to wash them off after the service. On the other hand, if your impulse is to immediately wash them off because you’re self conscious about others seeing you as a Christian in public, I would encourage you to delay washing them off.

"Like a lot things, I think it depends on your motivation. In fact, I personally feel convicted by the exact verse you posted, so I wash them off after the service. I still find meaning in the act during the service though."

(from username Seikoth, REDDIT, "Happy Wash Your Face Wednesday!" at https://www.reddit.com/r/Reformed/comments/1j434xy/happy_wash_your_faces_wednesday/ )

...

(sort-of-quote #2, to the best of my memory)

SPEAKER TWO: "When I was a young priest, I was scheduled to observe Mass on Ash Wednesday but I was out of town and flying back. I was anxious about missing my connecting plane but I could only wait. Then at my gate, a TSA agent pulled me out of line. I thought, oh, no, I'll miss my plane.

"He asked me if I was a Catholic priest. I answered, Yes. He asked if I had ashes on me. I answered, Yes.

"(I had them in my pocket. I don't know how I got them past airport security!)

"He said he couldn't go to church because he had to work. He asked if I would bless him with ashes. So I did. And when I looked up, there was someone behind him.

"I ended up distributing ashes for two hours. Missed my flight, of course. I called my church in a worry but the other priest said not to worry. Apparently I was exactly where I was supposed to be."

(--from Ash Wednesday Mass homily on March 5, 2025 on "Relevant Radio.")

NOTE: IF SOMEONE HAS THE EXACT QUOTE AND THE NAME OF THE SPEAKER, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO POST THE CORRECTION. (I think it was their "Father Simon" but I don't know.) THANKS!

I was a little bored tonight and hopped on, only to discover 23 people were viewing the movie forum. That prompted me to scroll down and see that 66 people were online! I know that's no record, but it has saddened me to see things so quiet here over the last few years. I always knew that as soon as things got into full swing, we'd all still be here, but I am so glad that I was right. Looking forward to the next few years of Narnia news with you. The movies may or may not be good, but we're about to have a blast! To Narniaweb!

Back in the day (over ten years ago...oof), I considered myself an agnostic/atheist because I felt like I didn't have enough convincing evidence to believe that there was a God, afterlife, etc. I wanted to believe, trust me--who wants to believe that "this is all there is"?--but I could not overcome the doubt and skepticism. The closest I got was entertaining reincarnation as a very real possibility (and I still do), but it was still just a hope or wish I felt like I had a little bit of personal evidence for rather than faith. It seemed like, even if I could manage to convince myself to believe, I would be lying to myself in order to make myself feel better. I suffered from a fear of death that peaked at full-blown crippling phobia.

I still have doubts and fears, of course (and I still deal with anxiety in general), but I just wanted to say that I no longer consider myself an agnostic/atheist and have not for some time. I now believe that we have an impressive amount of evidence for the existence of God, that scientific understanding points towards God as part of our reality, and that Jesus was who he said he was. I consider myself a Christian. I'm sure I have some beliefs that differ from the average Christian's, but I'm trying my best to have more faith and be closer to God.

I'm really appreciative of C.S. Lewis for creating Narnia. It was always in the back of my mind, and whenever I struggled to fall asleep because of terrible anxiety, it would always be a Narnia audiobook I played to help me fall asleep. I used to be a little resentful of how overt Lewis made the Christian themes in Narnia because I saw it as bordering on indoctrination...but now I honestly feel like he might have been divinely inspired. I understand that Narnia is not the most impressive work of fiction in terms of either plot or prose, but it seems there is an absolute truth in it which shines through for the spiritually hungry.

For anyone thinking I only came to this conclusion to make the fear go away, I am not the type of person who can convince themselves to believe in something for the sake of comfort; I need to have a real reason to believe it, otherwise simply believing in God would have cured my phobia years ago. Alternatively, maybe you think Lewis' indoctrination was successful, but I came to my conclusion about God/Jesus independently of Narnia and only realised later that Narnia must have resonated with me so strongly because of its message. I certainly have never felt this particular emotion about any other book, no matter how much I liked it.

It bothered me that I remembered writing comments/threads here where I declared myself an atheist... Atheists are totally different now than what I was. I NEVER wanted to belligerently argue that there was no God, I just did not feel like I had enough proof to believe in one. Even now, sometimes I'm like...what if this is all just delusion? But I will carry on believing regardless. Insert Puddleglum quote, lol.

Every year I start this thread <del>the beginning of the month</del> sometime in November with my favorite Thanksgiving tradition and a prompt to the share what you are thankful. My family has a jar (or two or three) that we fill with candy and nuts with each piece being for a different person, place, or thing we were thankful for. We call it "thankful fors". In recent years we have written them down and filled a notebook with the people, places, and things we are thankful to God for. Some days we have a theme like a favorite meal, places we have been, people we know, books, items around the house, or a few years ago we started drawing Scrabble tiles for several days and did our "thankful fors" starting with the letter drawn. The Scrabble tile draws have made for some great ideas and some bad ones, but mainly it has brought additional laughter to our family time. This has been our family tradition for over 20 years and I love it so much.

For those in the US, Canada, and other countries that have an official Thanksgiving Day:

Do you usually have a traditional Thanksgiving meal (for example in the US - turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, etc.)?

Do you feel sad about it as I do or do you accept the situation because there is nothing you can do about it? My own church had tried to keep going, but unfortunately the aging congregation could not attract new members and we will be closing. It’s a very sad situation when the church you attended all of your life will soon be gone.

Some early competition has already begun for this year's Summer Olympic Games, hosted by Paris. The official opening ceremony will be on Friday, July 26, with events continuing until the closing ceremonies on August 11.

Over 10,000 athletes from over 200 nations will compete. This year's motto is games wide open (Ouvrons grand les Jeux).

Do you watch Olympic coverage? What are you looking forward to seeing:

The pomp of the opening and closing ceremonies?
The joy of athletes at the medal ceremonies?
The athletic competition?

New this year will be a parade of boats carrying the athletes on the Seine during the opening ceremony.

Which sports do you enjoy watching? Are there "do not miss" events you can't wait to see?

Let the Games (and the discussion) begin!

"Laugh and fear not, creatures. Now that you are no longer dumb and witless, you need not always be grave. For jokes as well as justice come in with speech."

— Aslan in The Magician's Nephew

I've just been searching to see if we already have a jokes thread on NarniaWeb — it seems there were a couple in the past, but they've been inactive for over 10 years and are closed.

If it's OK with everyone, I'd just love to start a new one! Narnia-related jokes especially, of course, but I'm sure anything that is clean and appropriate — and likely to be enjoyed by fans of Narnia and other classic fantasy! — should be fine.

(Including old jokes, naturally. In the immortal words of Lewis again, "you've no idea how good an old joke sounds when you take it out again after a rest of five or six hundred years" (The Last Battle)... {ym}:giggle: )

Here are a couple of topical ones I've heard fairly recently:

"My local bookshop is having a sale — 1/3 off all titles. I've just bought The Lion, the Witch."

And (sorry the pun in this one only works properly with a non-rhotic accent... fine for most Brits as well as Aussies and New Zealanders, though):

Q. What does C.S. Lewis keep in his wardrobe?

Narnia business! {ym}
