Hi all, just wanted to share the impressive find my wife and kids found yesterday at local market. They had a stand at the local market yesterday, as one of my kids was selling scarves and beanies (and other similar things) that she has made. Whilst there, there was a stall where someone was selling books, DVDs and CDs etc... they found a BBC TV series paperback edition of The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe from 1988. I looked it up later in the evening and found that some people are selling the same edition for around $50-$60, but for me it would have more sentimental value, due to my love and appreciation of the BBC series when I was a kid. Hopefully the attachment to this picture will work correctly.

It's a book called "Painting Wonder: How Pauline Baynes Illustrated the Worlds of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R Tolkien." I haven't purchased it yet, but it looks so lovely and sweet, with beautiful illustrations. Definitely something I want for my collection. This might even be worthy of a news story on the main page, what with all the other book news floating about. Looks like it's a small business too. Amazon link

They're both available for pre-order right now on Amazon, though they havn't been officially announced by HarperCollins.

Step through the wardrobe and meet a wide variety of animals from C. S. Lewis’s beloved fantasy series in this Narnia animal adventure!

This board book is the perfect introduction to animals and the world of C. S. Lewis’s classic fantasy series, The Chronicles of Narnia, for the youngest readers. With simple text paired with bright illustrations by Joey Chou, this is a must-have board book for a child’s first library and the perfect baby shower gift for parents to be.

If HarperCollins is looking to expand Narnia as a brand, this is a much better way then say The Giant Surprise: A Narnia Story. Also, less risky than story adaptations like they did with LWW. I'm really looking forward to getting my hands of these books. Love Joey's style!

Do you wish for anything related to the Narnia books that was never made or is so rare that if you can find it the item would be very expensive? Here are some items I think would be interesting:

1. A guidebook to the BBC Narnia similar to those which were published about the Walden films. It would be great if there were a book describing how the BBC series was made with pictures behind the scenes.

2. Viewmaster reels of the BBC Narnia or the Walden films. Probably no 3-D pictures were taken during the production of the BBC Narnia, although I could not say for certain. The Walden film of Voyage of the Dawn Treader was made in 3-D, but by that time (2010) Viewmasters were still made but were less common than they used to be. I would still like to see pictures of Narnia in an old fashioned stereo viewer.

If you wonder what Viewmasters are here is an article from Wikipedia:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/View-Master

They were popular in the 1960’s and ‘70’s and are still made today, although there are fewer of them.

3. A miniature of the wardrobe larger than a Christmas ornament and available at a reasonable price. It would be similar to miniature lighthouses or replicas of the Dr. Who Tardis. The size which would have some detail would be about six inches high.

4. A Narnia clock of good quality. I found a Narnia clock about ten years ago, but it did not keep good time. It was rather cheaply made, although it did have Pauline Baynes’ artwork. There are Narnia wrist watches which have pictures from the Walden films, and they are pretty good, but pocket watches with designs based on Narnia are becoming very scarce.

Can you think of any others?

I thought these deserved their own topic. I don't love the AI-esque style for these but once I got over my initial disappointment, I quickly started to warm up to them. Well, some of them.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

This one bugs me. The character design for the White Witch is pretty nice but there's no scene in the book where all four Pevensies fight her. The closest we get is Peter (and possibly Edmund) doing that in the climactic battle and that's after Maugrim, whom you can see by the Witch's side on the cover, dies. Even if they're trying to appeal to fans of the movies, which focused more on action, there's no such scene in the cinematic LWW. So it even fails at that! {ym} And how come Lucy is using a sword instead of a dagger? In a behind-the-scenes Facebook video Harpercollins released, we do see the Stone Table on the back cover, which elevates this cover a bit but it's definitely one of the most misleading and irritating.

Prince Caspian

I really like this one, which may surprise some of you who are on the Narniaweb Discord since I wrote there that I disliked emphasizing action on the covers of Narnia books that aren't driven by it. But even though more of the book is spent wandering in the woods than literally fighting bad guys, I feel like, metaphorically speaking, it's about a conflict between Peter's Narnia and Miraz's Narnia. The only thing that really bugs me about this cover is the dramatic-looking rock at the bottom. Pretty sure Peter and Miraz were on even ground in the book. (Maybe this isn't Peter and Miraz? Maybe it's a different battle.) I actually do like the flowers though. The contrast between their beauty and the violence of the rest of the scene makes me think of Old Narnia sneaking up on them.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

This one is weird. While the sea serpent does wrap its coils around the ship in the book, it tightens them. There's way too much room between the coils and the ship in this picture. And what's with Reepicheep's pose. I guess he's shouting, "Don't fight! Push!" But it'd make more sense for him to be pushing himself in that situation. It honestly looks like he's dancing in this image. {ym} I don't hate the idea of showcasing the sea serpent scene on a cover of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, but I wish more cover artists would try to showcase the dreamy, poetic aspects of the book. Chris Van Allsburg is the only who has ever tried.

The Horse and his Boy

That's more like it! Despite all the sand, I assume this is the characters racing across the river, given the armor Aravis wears. I love the contrast between her clothes and Shasta's and the sense of desperation you get from them and the horses. I don't have a problem with putting an action scene on the cover of a Narnia book if that particular Narnia book is driven by action and that's true of The Horse and his Boy. I also like how Aslan looks scarier on this cover than on the others. That's in keeping with the plot. On the back of the cover, you can see the Ancient Tombs. Wish they were on the front.

The Silver Chair

This one is OK. The Silver Chair is another Narnia book where I feel that showcasing an action scene is appropriate. The story may not be wall-to-wall action, but it's got more suspense and adventure than some others. Like some of the other new covers, it more of a metaphorical image than a literal one. It portrays the silver chair as being behind Rilian when he's fighting the serpent even though it should be destroyed, and it makes it much bigger than the book describes. But I don't find the non-literalness distracting. That's because the symbolism is easy to grasp. The chair looms large over the characters. I'm a bit cynical about how they show Jill trying to help fight the serpent when she doesn't in the book. Strikes me as false advertising. But, hey, it fits with her generally pugnacious character. (Susan firing an arrow at the White Witch, on the other hand, just feels wrong.) My biggest problem with this cover is that Puddleglum isn't on it. He is going to be on the back cover but he's such an important character and he does try to help Rilian fight the serpent in the book...why shouldn't he be on the front?!

The Magician's Nephew

OK, this cover is just silly. They're trying to convey too many things at once. I understand the impulse since there are so many cool scenes in the story but the effect looks goofy IMO. I guess it's nice that they're trying to symbolize fleeing from temptation but when the heroes fly away from Jadis in the book, they fly up, not down. The only reason for the angle seems to be that the artist wanted to include the rings in the picture. And they just look silly. {ym} And what is up with Jadis's coloring? Green circles around her eyes and blue hair? What?!

The Last Battle

The falling stars at the top are cool. I like the feeling of intensity you get with all the flames and stuff. The only thing that really bugs me is the image of someone (Lucy? Peter? It can't be Tirian because he's elsewhere on the cover) looking through (I think) the doorway of the stable. It's cool that they wanted to represent both the dark part of The Last Battle and the bright part on this cover, but I feel like the bright part of the image is so vague that it's just confusing. Tash will be visible on the back of the book. Again, with not putting the cool stuff upfront.

All of the current offerings, to my tastes, seem lacking. I have the current mass-market paperbacks, and they are perfectly serviceable, though I don't really like the covers. The larger "trade" paperbacks, for some reason seem to have even rougher paper than the mass markets (at least my LWW does). I recently tried the full-color paperbacks, and while I love the illustrations, the books are unfortunately printed in China. That would not necessarily be a bad thing, except that I have noticed books printed in China often use a paper with a strange smell... as is the case with these. The paper not only smells, but is very heavy and waxy. I suppose they do that to make the color printing easier, or less see through, but I have other books that do color printing with better paper (albeit not sprinkled throughout as the Narnia pictures are).

Does anyone else feel this way about the current offerings? It doesn't seem fitting for Lewis's works to be neglected so. Of course, the words matter most, but I would like a book that was worthy of them.

I'm considering trying the current hardbacks. ISBN 0060244887. Does anyone know what these look like without the dustjackets on? Also, does anyone know if they use glued or sewn binding?

I recently came across this seller on Etsy who makes Narnia prop replicas! : https://www.etsy.com/shop/NRprops?ref=l2-about-shopname They've done quite a lot, ranging from Tumnus' house key and Narnian coins to Edmund's sword and Lucy's Cordial/Dagger. The quality is awesome (both from the pictures and the reviews) and the prices are surprisingly low for some of the items (might need me a key for Tumnus' house, ngl). They are based in the Netherlands, so that may pose extra shipping fees for some of us though...

Has anyone bought from them before?

Not sure how many other people would fall into the subset of Narnia Fan + Nirvana Fan but I thought it was a pretty cute design.
